Sonari college was established on 5^th August, 1970. The college was also permitted to start First Year TDC classes in Arts w.e.f. 1971-72 and received first Degree affiliation w.e.f. 1973-74. As per Dibrugarh University rule, a college is eligible for taking permission to start Honours in subjects after two years of first Degree affiliation. Following that rule and the recommendation of Expert Committee of Dibrugarh University, the Principal of the college started Honours in Economics in 1976. In 1983, Govt. of Assam conveyed concurrence to grant permission to start Honours in Economics (vide Memo No. EPH.248/83-A dated Dispur, the 3^rd October, 1983). In the same year, Dibrugarh university, granted permission to start Honours in Economics w.e.f. 1981-82 (vide Memo.No. DU/Admin/GC/AFF/83/2751-58 dated 27^th December 1983).
