The Department of Political Science at Sonari College, established in August 1970, is one of the oldest departments of the college. The college is affiliated with Dibrugarh University, so major courses are started with due permission from Dibrugarh University vide Permission Letter No. DU/Admn/CC/AFF/83/2751/58 dated December 27,1983, in the year 1982-83. Suresh Chandra Das was the first Head of the Department of Political Science. The Department offers both HS and UG courses.It has completed glorious 54 years  with a significant contribution towards teaching in the discipline of political science. The department has produced legislators, educators, administrators, social activists across the years. The Department has been involved in teaching as well as extension activities of the college. The first major batch was consisted of 15 students with a great mission and vision.
