Undergraduate programs
1. Four-Year Undergraduate Program (FYUGP)
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 ushers in a transformative era in higher education, and at its forefront is the introduction of the four-year undergraduate program. This innovative approach is designed to offer students a more holistic and flexible learning experience, aligning with the dynamic demands of the 21st century. The four-year undergraduate program is a departure from the traditional three-year structure, emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach and greater integration of practical skills. This extended timeframe allows for a more in-depth exploration of subjects, enabling students to delve into their chosen fields with greater thoroughness and understanding. Moreover, the extended duration of the program enables students to engage in internships, research projects, and industry collaborations. This emphasis on experiential learning enhances their real-world applicability of knowledge and prepares them for the challenges of a rapidly evolving professional landscape.
The FYUGP in Physics consists of six different types of courses- (i) Core courses, (ii) Minor courses, (iii) Generic elective courses (GEC), (iv) Ability enhancement courses (AEC), (v) Value added courses (VAC) and (vi) Skill enhancement courses (SEC). As per NEP’s recommendations the FYUGP in Physics also features multiple exit options:
- A certificate after completing 1 year of study
- A diploma after completing 2 years of study
- A Bachelor's degree after completion of a 3-year programme
- A 4-year multidisciplinary Bachelor's degree

2. Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS)
The Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) implemented by Dibrugarh University represents a contemporary and student-centric approach to higher education. Introduced to enhance flexibility, autonomy, and the overall learning experience, the CBCS system is designed to meet the diverse needs and aspirations of students pursuing various undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
Key Features of the CBCS System:
-
Credit-Based Structure: The CBCS system revolves around the concept of credits, where each course is assigned a specific number of credits based on its academic rigor and expected workload. Students are required to accumulate a set number of credits to successfully complete their degree.
-
Choice and Flexibility: A defining feature of CBCS is the emphasis on student choice. Under this system, students have the freedom to choose from a variety of elective courses, allowing them to tailor their academic journey based on their interests, career goals, and aptitude.
-
Continuous Evaluation: CBCS incorporates a system of continuous evaluation, moving away from a reliance on end-of-semester exams alone. This may include assignments, projects, presentations, and periodic assessments, providing a more comprehensive and continuous assessment of a student's performance.
-
Semester System: The CBCS system operates on a semester basis, typically dividing the academic year into two semesters. This structure allows for a more focused and in-depth study of subjects, promoting a thorough understanding of the curriculum.
-
Grading System: The CBCS system utilizes a grading system to evaluate student performance. This often includes letter grades or grade points, providing a nuanced understanding of a student's achievement in a particular course.
-
Interdisciplinary Approach: The CBCS system encourages an interdisciplinary approach to learning. Students can choose courses from various disciplines, fostering a broader understanding of interconnected subjects and promoting a holistic educational experience.
-
Skill Enhancement: In addition to core and elective courses, CBCS integrates Skill Enhancement Courses (SECs) designed to impart practical skills, enhance employability, and bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world applications.
