World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated annually on June 5 and encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment. It is supported by many non-governmental organizations, businesses, government entities, and represents the primary United Nations outreach day supporting the environment.
The first World Environment Day was held in 1973, and since then it has grown to become one of the largest global events for environmental awareness. The theme for 2023 was "Beat Plastic Pollution" and the event was hosted by Côte d'Ivoire.
There are many ways to participate in World Environment Day. You can organize or attend an event, make a personal commitment to reduce your environmental impact, or simply learn more about the environmental challenges facing our planet.
Here are some ideas for how you can participate in World Environment Day:
- Organize a locality cleanup or a tree planting event.
- Reduce your use of single-use plastics.
- Recycle and compost.
- Conserve water and energy.
- Eat less meat and more plant-based foods.
- Support businesses that are committed to sustainability.
- Get involved in environmental activism.
Every little bit helps! By taking action on World Environment Day, you can make a difference for the planet.
